Artist’s Reception for Kathleen Otley at Rob Schouten Gallery
June 3 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Kathleen works in mixed media, include willow sculpture and encaustics. Her stunning willow sculptures are created from farmed willow that she peels and dyes before joining with ropes, metals, leather and wire to transform into wall sculptures, which she often refers to as “shields” or “banners.”
Her encaustics are skillful assemblages of wax, resin, and pigment – multi-layered and hand painted with archival inks. The final surface is highlighted or antiqued with oil paints, tar, or graphite to create a depth of time, as if the piece is an archival finding rather than a newly completed art object. Fusing each layer and technique with heat marries it to the whole piece. A finished piece is up to a fourteen layer process.
Otley’s ‘contemporary primitive’ art is a bridge for the artist and the viewer to connect to the past–to a time when the spiritual journey was the measure of a life, when the human presence was a part of the natural flow of the universe, when our spirit and the spirit of nature were in balance–striving to find a sense of harmony that continues to live in our collective conscious.
